Deep Work Reset: How I Run 90-Minute Focus Blocks

Table of Contents

There’s a moment—right before you start a focus block—when your mind tries to escape.

In today's fast-paced world, maintaining focus can be a challenge. Many people struggle with distractions, whether they come from technology, the environment, or even our own thoughts. Developing a strategy to combat this can significantly improve productivity and overall well-being. Understanding what focus truly means is the first step in mastering it.

A notification.A sudden need to “just check something.”A burst of resistance that whispers: Maybe later.

But this moment is precisely where the reset begins.

Why I Don’t Just Block Time—I Engineer It

Focus isn't just about getting things done; it's about prioritizing tasks effectively. When we block time on our calendars, we're not merely scheduling tasks; we're creating a space for ourselves to concentrate and engage with our work deeply. This requires intention and preparation to maximize that time.

Implementing a deep work session can lead to breakthroughs in creativity and problem-solving. For example, when I focus on a challenging project during my 90-minute block, I often find that new ideas emerge, allowing me to tackle issues from different angles. This depth of engagement can lead to more innovative solutions.

Creating an environment that fosters focus is essential. This can include physical changes, like decluttering your workspace, as well as mental preparations, such as practicing mindfulness techniques before starting your session. These steps signal to your brain that it's time to switch into work mode.

Most people think productivity is about blocking time on the calendar. That’s just the first step. The real difference is how you prepare for that time and how you honor it once it begins.

After defining your goal for the session, consider breaking it down into smaller, manageable tasks. This not only clarifies your focus but also provides a sense of achievement as you check off each completed item. Seeing progress can motivate you to maintain your focus throughout the rest of the session.

I’ve learned that a 90-minute deep work session is one of the most powerful levers in my day. But to make it work, I’ve developed a system—a ritualized structure that helps me shift from scattered to focused.

Because if you only rely on willpower, you’ll lose the battle. But if you build an environment of focus, you start to win consistently.

How I Structure My 90-Minute Focus Block

Let me walk you through my reset process. This isn’t just a method—it’s a commitment to clarity, flow, and discipline.

1. Prepare the Space

  • Clear desk.
  • Close all tabs except what’s needed.
  • Set phone to airplane mode.
  • Headphones in.I often play music that supports flow—low beats, no lyrics.

2. Define the Goal

  • What exactly will I complete in this block?
  • What would make this 90 minutes a win?

Clarity creates momentum. Vague work leads to vague results.

3. Anchor the Start

I sit. Breathe. No rush.I anchor my intention with a single deep breath—and begin.

The start is sacred. No negotiation.

4. Work in Silence

For 90 minutes, I go in.No multitasking. No checking. Just focused output.I don’t wait for motivation. I work until it shows up.

If I get distracted, I gently return. No judgment—just reset.

During your focus time, experimenting with different techniques can enhance your productivity. For instance, using the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break, can maintain high levels of focus while allowing for periodic mental rests. This can refresh your mind and improve retention of information.

5. Reward the Exit

This is something I used to skip—until I realized how important it is.

A small reward anchors the habit. Stretch. Walk. Coffee. Music. A moment of stillness. It tells your brain: You did it. That mattered.

It's also important to recognize when you need to adjust your approach. If you find that you're regularly distracted or struggling to maintain focus, consider analyzing the factors at play. Is your environment too noisy? Is your workload too heavy? Making changes based on this assessment can lead to more productive focus blocks in the future.

Without a reward, your nervous system doesn’t close the loop. With it, you create a positive association with deep work—and increase the likelihood of showing up again.

This Is Not Just a Productivity Trick

This is how I rebuild trust with myself.

It’s how I train discipline, beat mental clutter, and do meaningful work—whether I’m building strategy, writing, designing content, or shaping my next vision.

One block at a time.

And yes, sometimes I fall off.Sometimes I open the tab. Break the silence. Lose the flow.

But the beauty of this system is that it always welcomes you back. Each block is a reset.

Ultimately, mastering focus requires an ongoing commitment to refining your approach. With each session, you can learn more about what helps you stay engaged and what detracts from your concentration. Through this, you build resilience and adaptability in your work, allowing you to thrive in any environment.

As you stack these focus blocks, you may notice a shift in your work habits. This compounding effect not only increases productivity but also builds a habit of discipline, leading to a greater sense of accomplishment over time. Consistently showing up for your work reinforces your ability to focus.

Here’s the part most people miss:It’s not about a single heroic burst of focus. It’s about compounding these blocks—day after day.

Two blocks a day = 10 per week. That’s 900 minutes of deep work.

Embrace the journey of self-improvement that comes with committing to these focus sessions. Each block represents an opportunity to elevate your skills and deepen your understanding of your work. This is not just about being more productive; it's about enhancing your overall quality of life and work satisfaction.

Imagine what you can create in that space.Imagine who you become when you show up for it.

Enjoy the journey. Be Growth.
