Are You Setting the Right Goals—Or Just Following Hidden Ones?

We talk a lot about goals here.

You’ll find blog posts on how to set them, how to structure them, how to execute them. I’ve written about lead and lag measures, about the One Focus Goal, about aligning your aspirations with your energy and purpose.

But today, I want to take you deeper.

Because before we can optimize how we set aims, we need to understand why targets are unavoidable.

Yes—unavoidable.

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you are always pursuing something. And not just you. Life itself is driven by aim-seeking behaviour.

The Nature of Hidden Goals

A tree stretches its roots to find water. Its leaves reach for the sun. That’s an aspiration.
A lion stalks a gazelle—aim.
A bee dances in the air, navigating thousands of meters to find nectar—target.
Everything in nature is oriented toward survival, nourishment, and reproduction.

Look at the natural world.

There is a natural intelligence behind all movements.

It may be unconscious, but it is deeply purposeful.

Now, zoom out.

We humans share that same biological programming. But we carry something the rest of nature doesn’t:

We have the ability to set conscious aims.

We don’t just pursue food.
We pursue fulfillment.
We don’t just survive.
We imagine a better life—and build bridges toward it.

That’s the superpower.
That’s the responsibility.

Conscious Goals vs. Default Goals

Here’s the distinction I want you to see clearly:

Most people think they either have aims or they don’t.
But in reality, everyone has targets—the difference is whether they are conscious or automatic.

  • Scrolling through social media when you’re tired? That’s a micro-goal: the search for stimulation or escape.
  • Saying yes to every meeting without strategy? That’s a default goal: avoiding discomfort or pleasing others.
  • Staying in the same job year after year without growth? That’s an unspoken goal too: maintaining predictability and security.

These aren’t bad. They’re human. But they’re not always conscious.
And if we’re not careful, we can spend years chasing aims we never chose.

This is why setting meaningful targets is not just a success habit. It’s a form of self-leadership.

Even Machines Have Goals

Think about the tools we create.
Machines are designed with clear outcomes in mind – or software.

A coffee machine has one job: make coffee.
A microwave: heat food.
A washing machine: clean clothes.
Each has a built-in purpose, an outcome it’s designed to achieve, and a system that leads to that result.

Now here’s the irony:

We build machines with goal orientation, while often drifting through life without defining our own.

Machines execute.
But we—humans—we can dream.

We can imagine a future version of ourselves.
We can define what we want.
We can build not just to function—but to matter.

The Power of Conscious Goal Setting

Here’s the truth I’ve come to believe deeply:

A meaningful life is one that moves toward a meaningful aim.

Not a perfect life. Not a life without uncertainty. But a life that is chosen.

This is where conscious aim-setting becomes a creative act.
It’s how we break away from survival mode and step into a life aligned with purpose, values, and vision.

It’s not about hustle.
It’s about intention.

You don’t need ten goals. You don’t need to “do more.”
You need to pause—and ask better questions:

  • What am I moving toward?
  • Is this my goal—or someone else’s?
  • Am I chasing approval, or building legacy?
  • What kind of world do I want to contribute to—and what role can I play?

This is where goal-setting becomes not just a tool for achievement… but a tool for alignment.

A Better World Starts with Better Goals

I believe in a better world.

Not in some vague, idealistic way—but in a strategic, long-term way.

And I believe that a better world starts with us. With the goals we choose. With the energy we give. With the projects, relationships, and work we commit ourselves to.

Because when individuals pursue conscious, aligned goals, the ripple effect is extraordinary:

  • Families change.
  • Communities shift.
  • Companies evolve.
  • Cultures transform.

This is why I care about aim-setting—not just as a growth strategist, but as a human being.
Because setting the right target isn’t just about reaching a milestone. It’s about becoming the kind of person who leads with purpose.

Final Reflection

You are already pursuing targets—even if you haven’t named them.
The question is: Are they the right ones?

Are you chasing comfort, or clarity?
Are you reacting—or creating?
Are you living by default—or by design?

Let today be the moment you pause.
Reflect.
And begin again—with intention.

Your next step doesn’t need to be big.
It just needs to be yours.

Enjoy the journey. Be Growth.
